Millets are humble seeded-grasses that have been cultivated in Asia and Africa since the dawn of Human Civilisation. They are highly tolerant of drought and other extreme weather conditions and have a similar nutrient content to other major cereals.

Ragi or Finger millet is known to have been cultivated in Northern Karnataka since the Iron Age.
